The Lail Family Saga from Kentucky to Missouri
(Column ~ 06/29/24)
On Jan. 16, 1941 Edward D. Hays published an article in The Southeast Missourian titled, “Louis Lorimier Was Not the First White Resident in the Cape District". A popular attorney, Edward Hays was mayor of Jackson from 1903-1907. He was elected Probate Judge of Cape County 1907-1918. Later, the old 14th Missouri district elected him U. S.. Congressman to go to Washington D. C. Before the move, he lived his whole life in Cape Girardeau County. Hays was a student of history. While researching history for his work, “Life of Louis Lorimer", Hays became engrossed in the story of the Lail family.

Movement, change and life force
(Column ~ 06/29/24)
I have always been one to meditate on life, in general. Life is so awesome and filled with treasures that it’s too big and too great for one to fathom. I recently said goodbye to visiting members of my family. They had to get back and again settle into their routines at home. Life goes on. I re-entered into my world and they into theirs. I find it amazing that God provides so many things in our lives that make it necessary that we learn, change and move our bodies to meet the demands of living on this earth. Although many do not relish the thought of moving and changing and learning, I find it wonderful that we are able to do what we must.

A unique turtle
(Community ~ 06/29/24)
This is a spiny softshell turtle. It is a common water turtle in southeast Missouri although it is not often seen. It seldom if ever basks on partially submerged logs like red eared slider turtles do. The spiny softshell prefers to sun itself on a dirt bank only inches out of the water where it can quickly dive in when alarmed.

Baptism
(Column ~ 06/29/24)
Last Sunday morning there were six or seven or eight baptisms at church. Really neat. Later that day, I was visiting with Mick, my brother in Nebraska, about the service, and Mick mentioned a baptism service the church in Arthur, Nebraska, had last summer. It’s officially a Baptism church, but since it’s the only church in Arthur and in a 40-mile radius, all denominations attend there. The church in Arthur has a baptistery, but instead of using it they decided to drive about 30 miles south to Lake McConaughy and have baptisms in the big sandy bottom lake. Mick said they waded out about chest high. Then after the baptisms, they had a bonfire on the beach and a hot dog roast and cookout. Neat service from the way Mick described it. Wish I’d been there.

The triumph of ‘The Blues Brothers’
(Column ~ 06/29/24)
By the time the makers of the "The Blues Brothers" had finished filming the movie’s epic finale in Chicago’s Daley Plaza, they’d spent $3.5 million on that scene alone. According to Daniel de Vise in his enjoyable new book on the iconic 1980 comedy, it was reportedly the most that had then ever been spent filming a movie scene in a big city.

Tim Scott’s important message
(Column ~ 06/29/24)
South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott hosted an event in Washington, D.C., marking the Juneteenth holiday, which showcased why he has been included among the candidates Donald Trump is considering as his running mate. Juneteenth, now a national holiday, commemorates June 19, 1865, the date of the final implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation in the State of Texas. It’s considered the official end of slavery in the United States.

Speak Out 6-29-24
(Speak Out ~ 06/29/24)
__Lexington roundabout__ The roundabout on Lexington Avenue has been taken over by weeds and waste-high grass. The city needs to keep this under control. It’s an eyesore and safety hazard. Other local roundabouts are kept up with landscaping rocks and flowers, but this one is regularly ignored. Please address.
