Why I’m grateful my mom didn’t let me quit piano
(Column ~ 05/11/24)
Growing up, I didn’t experience a major rebellious phase. I’m sure I had my moments, but frankly, between my parents’ guidance and church involvement, I stayed out of trouble for the most part. Looking back, I’m grateful for the direction they provided. However, one memory stands out—a conversation with my mom when I was 12.

Made by man or beast?

This is a strange sight. It is hard to imagine what might have made these things that look like baskets with rocks in them. They are not man made and were not made by any animal.

Embracing the wisdom of Psalm 20:4
(Column ~ 05/11/24)
At some point last fall, I came across Psalm 20:4, which reads, “May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans.” Psalm 20:4 is a prayer of blessing, invoking God’s name, character, and sovereignty to bless another. Immediately upon reading, I thought, if given the opportunity, this would be the verse to share with graduates and others celebrating significant milestones in their lives.

A blank page
(Column ~ 05/11/24)
A little over seven decades ago, I arrived in a hospital in Nebraska as the son of two proud parents. When I arrived, I had two older sisters to dote over me and to spoil me. But when I arrived I was virtually a blank page. I had some characteristics of both of my parents. Both of them had blue eyes and were just over 5 feet tall and relatively chubby as I am to this day. Dad was bald, but I still have my hair even though it’s a little lighter than it used to be. Dad had really small feet and so do I. I can wear a 7eee but normally settle for an 8ee. Mom and Dad were good in math and so are all their kids.

Ramblewood Garden Club awards May Yard of the Month
(Submitted Story ~ 05/11/24)
Ramblewood Garden Club has awarded the May Yard of the Month to Chris and Laurel Adkisson who live at 2129 Yorktown. In a neighborhood with well-landscaped yards, this yard stood out for the lush carpeted front and back lawns and the variety of colorful perennials for a neat and thoughtful landscape. Chris stated that the lawn was Dr. Paul Schnare’s Special mix of lawn seed, which includes the wide-bladed St. Augustine variety. When the Adkissons moved to the house there was no grass and it took a year and a half for the grass to grow into this dark green lawn. Tru-Green Lawn Care helps with that job now.

Headlines are now filled with names reported to be on Donald Trump’s "shortlist" of possible VP candidates. Guest commentary: A mother’s role in advancing shared parenting in Missouri
(Column ~ 05/11/24)
n this Mother’s Day, Missouri has much for which to be thankful. We became the fifth state to pass Shared Parenting legislation in 2023. Shared parenting advocates are pro-mom and dad! But they are especially pro-children! Motherhood is a blessing to me, and I will readily admit that the challenges of working and nurturing children at home are hard to handle all the time. Of course, that’s the beauty of shared parenting, sharing those responsibilities. I have met so many women in the movement who are mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers and aunts. This movement couldn’t have had the success it’s had without women stepping up to the plate.

A Mother's Ingenuity: Day of the Diaper
(05/11/24)
Believe it or not, there was a time not so long ago when there was no such thing as a disposable diaper. In those days, parents relied on safety pins and cotton cloth to contain the dirty doings of young children. That, of course, made changing from one such cloth to the next rather onerous...
