JACKSON -- Incumbents in most of the eight Cape Girardeau County offices up for election next year say they plan to run again. Voters next year will consider candidates for two-year terms on the county commission and for four-year terms in the offices of assessor, treasurer, sheriff, coroner, public administrator and surveyor...

An old Haarig landmark, the Orpheum Theater building at 615 Good Hope, has fallen victim to the ravages of time and soon will be demolished, according to Rick Murray of the city planning office. Cape Girardeau authorities decided to take down the 74-year-old building after authorities discovered the roof of the old theater had partially collapsed, which caused the upper west wall of the building to bulge...

After months of anticipation, the Salvation Army's Tree of Lights campaign is oh-so-close to it's $100,000 goal. With just two days remaining in the campaign, $3,500 needs to be collected for it to be considered a success. "Right now we're at $96,500" Capt. Elmer Trapp of the Salvation Army said Sunday. "We're confident we can reach our goal with donations that may have been mailed this weekend."...

The Southeast Missourian asked people about their interest in New Year's resolutions. Ed Meadows: "I usually try to make one or two of the standard resolutions, like lose weight and exercise more. The Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) awarded scholarships recently to three Southeast Missouri State University accounting majors at its annual Student Night. Being a 110 percent booster of Scott Central for over 25 years, we followed Marcus through his entire career there. Local officials of the American Red Cross have expressed concern over a decrease in area blood donations and have urged people to participate in one of a number of upcoming blood drives. We join them in urging the same. Traditionally, they say, blood donations fall off in December, but since Thanksgiving donations by people who sign up to give blood are 10 percent below the scheduled donations of a year ago...
