THE PUBLIC MIND: MAN QUESTIONS CITY HALL JUSTICE
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/09/90)
Dear Editor: I have a few questions about how city court is run in Cape Girardeau. I had to appear in city court recently on two charges of harassing phone calls. As I do not live in Cape I brought along my long distant phone bill charges for the times in question thinking this would clear the matter up...

THE PUBLIC MIND: LUNG ASSOCIATION DISPUTES CRITICISMS OF COLUMNIS WILLIAMS
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/09/90)
Dear Editor: It's a rare and unfortunate occasion when the American Lung Association finds itself the object of malicious and inaccurate accusations. When attacks do occur, the prudent response is silence, since rebuttal often only serves to spread the falsehoods further. But when the misinformation persists, and the accuser is granted a prominent forum, action is needed!...

MORE STUDY GOOD IDEA FOR GOLF COURSE FEE HIKE
(Editorial ~ 12/09/90)
The Cape Girardeau City Council's plan to hold a public hearing on proposed golf fee hikes is right on par. Users of the course are the ones who will be paying the added costs, and they should have a voice in the decision. The fee request is prompted by a desire to make the golf course self-sustaining. That's important, but the city must be careful not to price users out of the market...

THE PUBLIC MIND: WE MUST REMAIN DISASTER PREPARED
(Letter to the Editor ~ 12/09/90)
Dear Editor: This is an open letter to the citizens of our area. We have just lived through a rather extraordinary period in the evolution of our area. Some good things, and some not-so-good things have happened on the trek to Dec. 3, 1990. It is time, however, for us to put the hysteria and recriminations behind us, and stop beating up ourselves, and each other, over why we prepared for disaster...

CAPE GIRARDEAU NEWS GUARDIAN: THE REST OF THE JOHN MARTIN-LOUIS JORDAN STORY
(Column ~ 12/09/90)
Don Pritchard's Advertorial in your Dec. 9 newspaper contained a misquote of a letter I had written to the Assistant City Attorney about the Louis Jordan/John Martin dispute. Don Pritchard quotes me as saying that I had spoken with Patrolman Louis Jordan and with John Martin and found them both "unbelievable." Actually, in my letter I said I found them both believable. ...

COME TO BETHLEHEM, LEAVE THE HEART'S OBLATIONS
(Column ~ 12/09/90)
My ears were alert for the first Christmas song of the season. It's a little game I play with myself each year, guessing which one it will be and where I will be at the time. This year it was "Oh Come All Ye Faithful," known in Latin as "Adeste Fideles." I was coming down the stairs with an armful of angels, shepherds, Wise Men, and sheep when the age-old song came to me by way of Magnovox...

THIS PERTAINS TO the gossipers in our society. I thoroughly agree with Mike Seib's article, Pin Talk, in the Nov. 26 paper. I moved away from here a number of years and returned because of the good schools here for my children. Now I must say I do believe gossip is the main subject for most meetings, whether they be private clubs, church circles, community socials, business meetings or just plain backyard gossip. ...

I THINK IT'S A total disaster that Sarita Wesley was not named to the all-tournament team of the girls SEMO basketball tournament, which was just held. THERE WAS NO newscast of the earthquake they had in Nevada yesterday. It could be that Browning wasn't all wrong. I WOULD LIKE to remind the readers that Iben Browning's prediction was not wrong.
